Barbara Mae Aslett

Barbara Mae Morris Aslett passed away on May 10, 2019.
Barbara’s chosen words for her obituary were “she was a friend”.
These words are a beautiful tribute to a woman who filled all who knew her with love, peace, and friendship.
She was born on September 22, 1937 in Gooding, Idaho to Vera and Robert Morris.  Barbara’s childhood was dramatically changed when her father died of a heart attack when she was only seven years old.
From that time on, she filled a special place of friendship to her mother, who navigated the difficult, lonely road of being a widow.
In her teen years, one of Barbara’s close friends invited her to attend mutual activities of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  She found direction and peace in the things she learned from friends, ward members, and missionaries in this newfound congregation. She was baptized at the age of 14 and the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ burned brightly through her for the rest of her life.
Barbara met Don Aslett at a church youth activity.  Don later said “I’d heard scores of ‘that’s the girl I’m going to marry’ stories, and did indeed suddenly have that feeling about her.  It was an impression that never left me…(no one had) touched my spirit like this”. Don and Barbara were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on December 27, 1957.
Barbara was a loyal wife and patient friend through Don’s entrepreneurial career. They lived in Pocatello, then later moved to McCammon where they built a home where they could raise their family of “six children born in seven years”.  They also spent several years in Sun Valley Idaho while Don did work for the ski resort.
Barbara was a kind, gentle, and patient mother, always unselfish and willing to give of herself.  She served in the church, cared for her mother and stepfather and opened her home to teens and young adults who needed a home.   She showed great resilience by completing her college education while raising her children.
She was a beloved grandmother.  She created an environment where 23 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren felt free to explore and discover.  Each one of them felt like they were her favorite.
Many of Barbara's closest friends were a result of accepting callings and serving in the church.  She served a mission with Don in Lowell Massachusetts and brought many hearts closer to Christ through her genuine kindness and friendship.  She was a missionary of God's love every day of her life by the way she loved people.
Barbara spent many of her later years living on the island of Kauai.  She loved the ocean and jungle landscapes of the island, but she found the greatest beauty in the people.  She established deep friendships with neighbors that became her extended family. She treated everyone she met with love and acceptance.
Barbara was a friend to many generations through her family history work.  She worked in the Family History Center on Kauai and linked many generations together through her temple work.
Barbara was a friend to Christ; she loved him deeply and lived her life as a quiet example of gentleness, patience, meekness, endurance and strength. She had a special connection to heaven.  Above all, she lived the principle of “love one another as I have loved you” every day of her life.
She is preceded in death by her parents Robert and Vera, her stepfather Jerry Reid, her brothers Robert Jr., Frank, and Jack, and her beloved grandson Jacob Simons.
She is survived by her husband Don Aslett, (McCammon, ID) her children Laura (Rob) Simons (Bountiful, UT) Karla (Duff) Ray (Skagway, AK), Grant (Margie) Aslett (N Salt Lake, UT) Elizabeth (Martin) Clark(Fruit Heights, UT), Cindy (Dee) Miles (Roosevelt, UT), and Rell (Kristie) Aslett (St. George, UT.
