Denzel Maudie Smith McLain, 91, longtime resident of Chubbuck, Idaho passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Abblington Manor Assisted Living Center in Lehi, Utah.

She was born March 3, 1922 in Toro Bend, Vernon Parish, Louisiana, the daughter of Sim Smith and Myrtie Lee Holt Smith.

She married Carlos McLain on November 1, 1941 in Leesville, Vernon, Louisiana. They were stationed at Camp Polk, Louisiana until discharged in 1945. While stationed at Camp Polk, they were blessed with two daughters, Linda Carole and Marjorie Gayle. After being discharged, they returned to Greene County, Mississippi, where Carlos was born and raised. There they were blessed with four more daughters, Brenda Darnell, Gwendolynn, Julia Rae, and Marsha Leah. Carlos and Denzel remained in Greene County until 1978 when they sold the farm and moved to Chubbuck, Idaho.

Denzel loved gardening and was awarded yard of the year for her beautiful flowers. She spent much of her time researching her genealogy after retiring from the Pocatello School District #25. Denzel moved to Lehi, Utah in 2007 after a stroke.

She is survived by five daughters, Gayle (Leroy, deceased) Thompson, Chatom, Alabama; Brenda (Chad) Andra, Hamilton, Montana; Gwen (Tom) Chapo, Granite Falls, Washington; Judy (Dennis, deceased) Hess,Chubbuck, Idaho; Marsha McLain, Barnwell, South Carolina; a sister, Loretta Loften, DeRidder, Louisiana; seventeen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband (1988), a daughter, Linda Carole (Grant, deceased) Woodbury (2011), grandsons, Carlos Lynn (Bo) Hess (2012), John Carlos Chapo, (1982), brothers, J.L. Smith, Anson Darwin Smith, Buford Smith, sisters, Virginia Smith, Nellie Evalee Smith.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chubbuck L.D.S. 2nd Ward Chapel ( 4775 Hawthorne Road) with Bishop Kim Guymon officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday evening June 7, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave, and on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel.
