With heavy hearts, we remember and celebrate the life of George Matthew Swenson, who passed away on July 4, 2026, in Pocatello, Idaho. Born December 21, 1950, in San Jose, California, George brought light, laughter, and an enduring kindness to the lives of all who knew him.
George’s early years were spent in San Jose, where he attended Camden High School, graduating with the class of 1969. Even then, his sense of humor and easygoing nature were apparent to classmates and teachers alike. George’s heart led him far beyond the walls of his childhood home; as a young man, he embarked on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil North—a journey that shaped his lifelong commitment to service and broadened his capacity for compassion.
He meet the love of his life Barbara in 1974. They were married in the Oakland Temple that same year and have cherished their 51 years together.
In his career as a System Administrator in Electronics, George applied not only his technical skill but his deep patience and willingness to help others. Colleagues and friends recall his knack for solving complex problems—and for sharing a lighthearted joke that could ease any tense moment.
George’s proudest accomplishments cannot be measured solely by his professional achievements or acts of service. They live on in the devotion he gave unwaveringly to his family. He found his greatest joy in the simple pleasures he shared with those he cherished. He loved cooking and entertaining, filling his home with laughter and the irresistible aromas of homemade meals. Family gatherings around board and card games were common, with George at the center, braiding hair, telling stories, and making sure everyone felt welcome—dogs included, for he had a special fondness for their loyal company.
His big heart was matched only by his generosity of spirit. George was always willing to help others, whether lending a hand in a time of need or simply offering a kind word. His warmth, humor, and love enriched every friendship and filled his home with a sense of belonging.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara; his daughters, Linda and Tamara; and his sons Richard and Matthew. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 6 brothers and 1 sister. They each carry forward his legacy of compassion, humor, and love. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Mildred Swenson, 4 brothers, and 1 sister, whose memories remain treasured in the hearts of the family.
A viewing will be held on Monday July 13, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM at the LDS Chapel Butte and Hiskey, (2300 Butte Street, Pocatello, ID). The funeral service will follow at the same location at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Pocatello.
As we gather to remember George Matthew Swenson, we honor his gentle spirit and celebrate the profound love and laughter he so freely gave. His presence enriched each life he touched, leaving us with cherished memories and the example of a life well-lived. Though he is gone from our sight, the echoes of his kindness and humor will remain in our hearts always.
