Margie Baker Combs Ells

Margie Baker Combs Ells, 92, passed away November 23, 2014 at Portneuf Medical Center after a fall. She was born in Afton, Wyoming September 25, 1922, the first surviving daughter of the nine children of William Alonzo Baker and Blanche Mayberry Braley.

From early pioneer roots, Margie's family were among the first settlers in Star Valley, Wyoming. Her father was farmer, postmaster, and owned the general store in Etna. She remembers going to school in a covered wagon, reading by oil lamps, having no indoor plumbing or central heating but being very happy even through the great depression and WWI.

She became a war bride at 17 and followed her husband, Cyrus David Combs, when he was stationed in the U.S.A. Other times she stayed with her family in Star Valley. Five of her brothers and 2 brothers-in-law also went to war and gratefully all returned. After the war, the Combs family moved to Montpelier, Idaho where David worked on the railroad and became a journeyman plumber. They moved to Pocatello in 1957. David died at the age of 56 (1971) after a 9 year struggle with a rare blood cancer. Left with a young family and heavy medical bills, Margie worked odd jobs until hired at ISU in custodial and she continued her education, getting secretarial training which she used working for SE Idaho Health Department. She worked in the LDS Singles program and served a mission to Michigan and at the Hill Comorah Pageant for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

After 16 years of widowhood, Margie married Everett Ells. They enjoyed nearly 25 years together traveling, at family events, gardening, and doing temple work. They served 3 missions together. They had many friends throughout the community. Between Margie's nine children: Rosanna (Terry) Andersen, David (Kathy/deceased) Combs, Barry (Rita) Combs, Margie Anne (Doyle) Haws, Steven (Judy) Combs, Daniel J (deceased), Blair (Amy) Combs, Carolyn (Paul) Seyfried, Wallace - deceased (Lena) Ells, and Janet (Shane- deceased) Foracker, they have over 50 grandchildren, over 100 great grandchildren, and 20 plus in great-great grandchildren. Everett passed away in 2012.

Siblings proceeding her in death were Vela, Carl, Dennis, and Rex. Surviving her are Lloyd, Wayne, Lester, and Elcie.

Margie is a survivor of breast cancer. She remained active, well read, informed, and is known for her cards, letters, and collection of inspirational thoughts. She deeply cared about her family, friends, and neighbors. She will be greatly missed.
