Twin Falls – Myrl Leroy Byrd, 80, of Buhl, passed away the morning of Saturday August 24, 2024, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Magic Valley. He was the youngest of five children, born to John and Alice Byrd on September 29, 1943, at St Valentine’s Hospital in Wendell, ID.
His childhood was spent in Jerome, ID, where he attended the Appleton School. He participated in 4H, photography club, and various school activities. He attended schools in Pocatello, and graduated high school in Garden City, ID in 1961.
Following High School, Myrl joined the United States Air Force, having been honorably discharged after a brief service.
Myrl worked in several different fields, including fish hatcheries, the poultry industry, and finally the JR Simplot company from 1977, for many years, until retirement.
In 1964 he married Carol McAuley, and the two had one daughter, Kristine Marie. Later, in 1971 he married Carol Wilcox, and together they had two children, Hollie Lynn, and Bryan Winfeld. Myrl enjoyed spending time in nature, fishing, camping, gardening and trail riding on his four- wheeler. Over the years he had a variety of hobbies. He was a member of the Jaycees in the late 1960s. He enjoyed trap shooting and participated in competitions as a member of the Pocatello Trap Club. He was a supporter of Golden Gloves boxing. He loved reading about history and researching his ancestry. He loved old country music!
He enjoyed taking his family on driving trips, exploring different parts of the Western United States. These trips always came with history lessons. He never missed an opportunity to share knowledge with us and teach us skills. He taught us life skills, and how to be handy around the house. We did a great many DIY projects, but not all of them ended with “high fives.” He encouraged our interests and talked to us about things that were important. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, all you had to do was ask.
He had a great love for his family, and his family for him. He struggled to stay healthy in his final years of life, suffering from COPD. His passing has left a void in our lives, and he will be dearly missed. Breathe easy, old man.
Myrl was preceded in death by his mother and father; his son Bryan Byrd; his brother John T. Byrd; and his beloved dog, Hollie. He is survived by his siblings, Betty (David) Alger of Twin Falls; Patsy Fattig of Wendell; Richard (Jessie) Byrd of Rogerson; daughter Kristine Davis and grandson Casey (Giana) Huff of Casper, WY; grandson Cody (Katie) Christensen of Twin Falls; granddaughter Korissa Davis of Pocatello; daughter Hollie (Brandon) Ebert, and grandsons Olie, and Brandon of West Valley City, UT, and numerous nieces, nephews and great grandchildren.
The memorial service will be graveside at the Rose Hill Cemetery, 2355 Rollandet, Idaho Falls on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 12noon.
