Shirley MacButch

Shirley MacButch, age 96 of Pocatello, ID Passed away on Sunday May 27 at
Quail Ridge Assisted Living.
Shirley was born on the family farm on the 30th of November 1921 in Cornish, UT
to Lewis Henry and Leeta Allen (Bergeson) Baker.
She graduated from North Cache High School and attended Weber State
College in Ogden, UT. When the Second World War broke out, she went to work
at the Army Depot in Ogden, while still attending night classes at Weber State. It
was during this time that she met Michael MacButch who was stationed at Hill
Field Air Base in the Army Air Corps. A few months later Mike got transferred to
Oklahoma City and Shirley and her mother Leeta hopped on a train and traveled
to Oklahoma City where they got married.
Like her mother Leeta, she was very tolerant person, a big supporter of F.D.R.
and remained a life long democrat.
After the war, Mike got a job with Commercial Credit and they moved to Twin
Falls, ID where they had their first child Lizabeth. A little while later Mike was
offered a new job to open a branch of Idaho Finance and in 1949 they moved to
Pocatello. It was here that Bruce and Scott were born. While still working at
Idaho Finance Mike and Shirley bought the Credit Bureau of Pocatello. Shirley
worked many long hours and weekends to help make the payments on the new
business, while Mike continued to work at Idaho Finance. Soon Mike left Idaho
Finance and Shirley and Mike managed the Credit Bureau until their retirement.
Mike was the love of her life, and passed away in 1989.
Shirley didn’t shy away from adventure and even managed to survive an ill
equipped Middle Fork of the Salmon River trip back in the early ‘80’s with family
and friends. She loved music, driving (well into her eighties) her friends to Sun
Valley for the annual summer Jazz Festival. Shirley stayed active playing Bridge
for many years, thoroughly enjoying attending New Knowledge Adventures
classes and was an active member of P.E.O.
She was the youngest and the last surviving member of a family of four children:
Verle Lesnan (1914-1990), Iris Bench (1917-2011) and Allen Baker (1920-1975).
She is survived by children: Lizabeth (David) McGee, Bruce (Sue) MacButch and
Scott (Lynda) MacButch, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
The family especially wants to thank the caring staff at Quail Ridge and also the
compassionate care she received toward the end from the hospice nurses at
Encompass – you are all the best!
A celebration of life will be held at Juniper Hills Country Club Thursday, June 7
from 3-6 pm. A graveside service will be held Friday, June 8 at 11 am at the
Lewiston City Cemetery in Lewiston, UT (5 miles south of Franklin, ID).
In lieu of flowers, you might think of donating to the Alzheimers’s Foundation or
the Bannock County Humane society. Maybe just give somebody a hug!
