McCammon - Vernon Thomas Harris, 93, of McCammon, Idaho, passed away at Portneuf Medical Center on Tuesday, December 6, 2011.

Vernon was born on October 27, 1918 in Kaysville, Utah to Thomas Henry and Mabel May Davis Harris. He attended grade school in McCammon and graduated from McCammon High School. He attended the University of Idaho, Southern Branch, ( Idaho State University).

He married Erma Dene Henson on May 17, 1941 in Pocatello, Idaho and their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. Erma passed away on January 26, 1990.

Vernon served in the United States Navy during World War II and was the chief cook on the USS Goldstar. He was an active member of the VFW for many years. Vernon was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions throughout his life.

He was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad, Zwiegart Meat Packing Company and retired as an employee of Bannock County (Road & Bridge Dept.). He was a gifted handyman and gave many hours of unselfish service in assisting the residents of the Marsh Valley area with various projects and repairs.

He is survived by his children, Kaye (Howard) Romriell, of McCammon; Mark H. (Margie) Harris of Boise; Vernon Lynn (Janie) Harris of Inkom; Laraine (Bill) Hunter, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Robert Dene (Yvonne) Harris of Mountain View, Wyoming; James David (Marilyn) Harris, of Idaho Falls; Richard Jay (Sue) Harris, of Idaho Falls; a brother, Gary (Viola) Harris, of Idaho Falls, a sister ,Josephine Smith, of Idaho Falls; a sister-in-law, Lois Harris of McCammon. He is also survived by 47 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma; his daughter, Christine Heer; sisters, Vivian Southworth, Naomi Stinger, Ellen Jenkins; brothers, Lionel Harris, Eugene Harris.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2011, at 12:00 noon at the McCammon L.D.S. Stake Center, McCammon, Idaho with Bishop Roger Morris, of the Mountainview Ward, officiating. Interment will be in the Norton Cemetery in McCammon with military graveside rites provided by the Downey, Idaho American Legion Post 21, Dennis Phillips, Commander.

The family will meet with friends Friday evening, December 9, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 p,m. at the McCammon Stake Center and Saturday, December 10, 2011 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. preceding the services.

Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave..
